Covenant Has 76 Named To USA South All-Academic Team

Monday, June 18, 2018

The USA South Athletic Conference announced its 2017-18 All-Academic honorees on Monday and 76 Covenant student-athletes were recognized.

Beginning in 2017-18, the USA South made adjustments to its criteria for the academic honor.

Students must now produce at least a 3.30 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters to qualify for the award, an increase from the previous 3.0 GPA requirement. Additionally, the conference added an Awarded with Distinction honor for an athlete with a GPA of 3.90 or better in both semesters.

Of the 76 Covenant honorees, 11 were awarded with distinction.

This academic year, 1,446 students from across the USA South earned Academic All-Conference honors.

Women's soccer and baseball led all Covenant programs with 13 honorees apiece. Women's track and field had nine students earn the honor, with seven on the women's cross country team. Men's soccer also placed seven on the list, while softball and women's basketball had six each. The softball program led Covenant with three honorees on the Awarded with Distinction list.

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 2018 Ig Nobel Awards

The word ‘ignobel’ is rarely used because only a few among us know that it means "characterized by baseness, lowness, or meanness." About 30 years ago, a glorious group of great scholars took a literary hatchet to form the word into ‘ig nobel’ so it could be placed in the dictionary as a term that means “a satirical social criticism that identifies absurd research.” Think of ...
