The 2017-18 Youth Leadership class of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce successfully raised $1,804 in funding support for Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland’s home construction fund this year as part of their annual service project.

The twenty-six juniors and seniors from Bradley Central, Cleveland and Walker Valley High Schools and Tennessee Christian Preparatory School will also volunteer “sweat equity” later this school year by painting and landscaping at Habitat homes.

At the summer Youth Leadership retreat, organizers challenged the youth leaders to brainstorm creative ideas to raise funds for Habitat and raise a minimum of $400 at their respective schools. Sherry Crye, coordinator of the Youth Leadership program said, “We are pleased with this year’s efforts as they learn the importance of giving back to their community.”

Youth Leadership is a workforce development program of the Chamber of Commerce designed to prepare young people for leadership in Cleveland and Bradley County.

For information about the program, contact Sherry Crye with the Chamber at 423 472-6587 or visit www.clevelandchamber.com.

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 2018 Ig Nobel Awards

The word ‘ignobel’ is rarely used because only a few among us know that it means "characterized by baseness, lowness, or meanness." About 30 years ago, a glorious group of great scholars took a literary hatchet to form the word into ‘ig nobel’ so it could be placed in the dictionary as a term that means “a satirical social criticism that identifies absurd research.” Think of ...
